Cure for Nail Biters

When a nervous habit crosses the line into self-destructive behavior, it's time to seek help. For compulsive nail biters, that help may be on the way.

A study sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health has identified a drug, clomipramine, that shows promise in reducing or eliminating the nail-biting habit. Of 14 subjects, seven were able to cut back on nail biting and two stopped altogether. Clomipramine is an antidepressant.

If your nail biting or other habit threatens to become an obsession, consult a mental health professional. Many treatments exist besides drug therapy.
